HAWTHORN HAWKS VS WEST COAST EAGLES

SUNDAY MAY 9, 1.10 PM, MELBOURNE CRICKET GROUND

West Coast head back to Melbourne for a ripe opportunity to get the monkey off their back and finally register a win away from Perth in 2021, against a troubled Hawks outfit suffering through a lean year with plenty of injuries.  The Eagles have been a force in Perth, but unable to beat anyone in Melbourne to date and hence find themselves in 7th with a 4-3 record following their 59 point thumping of Fremantle in the derby last weekend.  Hawthorn have just 2 wins to their names this season, and are desperate to get another, so they can dream of going on a roll, and getting back into the competition, their latest thrashing was a 69-point job at the hands of St Kilda.  Sunday looks to be a cool, fine autumn type day in Melbourne, without rain, ideal for families and spectators in general to watch an interesting game at an iconic venue, the MCG.

Harry Morrison celebrates his young career with a 50th game in a small milestone for the Hawks, who are dogged by injury, as they have shelved O’Brien and also rested Moore, on top of all the earlier season ailments.  Greaves and Maginness were not selected, as there is a little bit of good news for Hawthorn, that being the return of Wingard in the forward pocket, while Howe joins the bench and so does Hartley.  The Eagles have some concerns of their own, as Duggan and Vardy are not fit, which, does leave them a quality ruckman down, putting more pressure on Naitanui to succeed.  Ainsworth was not selected either, but coming into the squad are Ah Chee and Bailey Williams.

As two of the most successful teams not to have met in a final in the past decade, these teams have had no shortage of classic encounters, like the one back in June 2019, when the Eagles won by a goal.  Since then though, Hawthorn did the job in Perth, winning by 38 in August 2019 and then were smashed by 32 in the shortened version of the game in the Covid-19 riddled 2020.  According to the margin market, the Hawks are 2 goals worse off than West Coast after the final siren, while they are $2.55 to win, as compared to the Eagles, who are $1.52, and will be hoping they win the battle of the big birds.

PREDICTION: Eagles by 15-20, breaking their 2020 duck in Melbourne.

BETTING TIP: $2.10 for West Coast to win by 1-39 is good odds.
