NZ AOTEAROA SUPER RUGBY ROUND 7

WELLINGTON HURRICANES VS CANTERBURY CRUSADERS

SUNDAY APRIL 11, 3.35 PM, SKY STADIUM, WELLINGTON

Last season is a long time ago in rugby, but Wellington will remember their clash against Canterbury fondly, with their wish that they could repeat the dosage, as they are in trouble, 12 months later now that they get to host Canterbury again.  Wellington have had a retched start to 2021, and anchor the table with just 1 win, though that win did come last game against the high-flying Otago, who bounced back from that loss and belted the previously unbeaten Crusaders last weekend.  Canterbury remain top of the table, but will view that loss as a wake-up call and be out to rectify the situation here against Wellington, which is not exactly great news for the hosts.  Top temperatures in the high teens, will be made much cooler as Windy Wellington lives up to its name on Sunday, though thankfully no rain is predicted.

Wellington are sticking with the front-row that did the job so well for them against Otago a fortnight ago, after surely resting throughout much of the bye weekend.  James Blackwell starts at lock for the Canes, as Scrafton drops to the bench, while Devan Flanders dons the 8 jersey this week pushing skipper Savea back to flanker.  Ruben Love gets another opportunity to start in this game, ahead of Leger, while Umaga-Jensen and Julian Savea again get chances in the backline.  Oliver Jager is called upon for the Crusaders to start at prop, while Whetukamokamo Douglas gets a game at lock.  Bryn Hall starts in the halves ahead of Drummond who drops to the Crusaders bench, while excitement machine Sevu Reece returns on a wing.

In their opening fixture at Christchurch the home side Canterbury, were way too good for Wellington, just 5 weeks ago, as they won 33-16, and at that point carried on their unbeaten ways.  It was in Christchurch though, that Wellington spoiled the party for Canterbury last year, when their only loss happened, and the Canes won by 2 points; the game prior here at Wellington was a comfortable 14-point win for Canterbury.  From here, Canterbury are $1.47 favourites to win their 2nd Aotearoa tournament, while the Canes are in must win status as their odds show at $67.  For this game, Canterbury are $1.25 favourites and predicted to win by 10, while Wellington are outsiders at $4.

PREDICTION: Canterbury by 12.

BETTING TIP: $2.70 is nice odds if you are comfortable betting that Wellington can stay within a dozen of the Crusaders.
