Volleyball Live Stream: Where to Watch Live Games and a Beginner's Guide to the Sport

As far as fast-paced, exhilarating team sports are concerned, few offer as much excitement and nail-biting drama as volleyball. Although it has never managed to amass the massive, worldwide following like football or basketball, it has still solidified its position as one of the greatest team disciplines to have ever graced the world of sports. Every single match can turn into a five-set long battle, and although they can last for quite a long time sometimes, they are hardly ever "boring.”

Contrary to other team sports such as rugby or football, volleyball is one of the easiest ones when it comes to understanding the rules. Thanks to the simplistic rules and a straightforward run of play, it's as close to "pick-up-and-play" as team sports get.

We'll look into the ruleset of the game later on in this article, but most of it comes down to trying to get the ball to fall to the ground on the opponent's half, which grants your team a point.

Regardless of whether you're a lifelong follower of volleyball and are looking for a new site to watch live matches on, or a rookie trying to get a grip on the rules of the sport, you've come to the right place! Our brief guide to volleyball has all the information you're looking for, and more!

Live Volleyball Streaming: Where to Watch and Other Tips

Although there are national volleyball leagues in nearly every country, these tournaments don't really attract as much attention as the FIVB Volleyball Nations League or the World Cup, where national teams battle it out for the highest honors. This means that there aren't as many websites that offer high-quality streams of various volleyball leagues as you would find in the case of football or basketball.

If you're interested in viewing your local volleyball league matches, or the CEV Champions League, Joker Live Stream is the site for you! On top of the links to most, if not all matches that are going on on any given day, you'll also be able to find streams of beach volleyball games and chat with other users about the results, players, as well as best odds, if you're into sports betting.

International clashes of national teams are, of course, also available on our site. However, since they belong to some of the most popular streams, you might want to consider purchasing the premium option in order to get the best video quality possible and avoid lags and glitches that might come as a result of overloaded servers.

Finally, if you care about understanding the live commentary during your stream and you're not as comfortable with English, you might want to search for a VOD site of your national sports TV provider. Most of these companies offer standalone apps with a subscription option to accommodate the demands of sports fans. They'll most likely have the games you're looking for, with commentators speaking your native language. Keep in mind, however, that these services are costly, and you might have to pay extra to gain access to some of the more obscure leagues.

A Brief History of Volleyball

As opposed to other popular team sports, volleyball's roots aren't random. There is also no "founding myth" to tell and inspire new generations of players, like in the case of rugby or football. The conception of volleyball is actually quite straightforward -- it was invented by William G. Morgan, the director of a YMCA center (Young Men's Christian Association) in Holyoke, a small town in Massachusetts. He designed the sport in 1895 to accommodate the requests of many businessmen who were intimidated by basketball's physicality and requirements. Basically, volleyball was invented to meet the demand for a team sport that didn't require as much running as others.

Despite the rather anticlimactic origin story, YMCA, in cooperation with the National Collegiate Athletic Association, has managed to popularize volleyball across the United States. It has made its way to Europe thanks to American troops who've played it there during World War I.

The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball, or FIVB, was formed in Paris in 1947, and it's the main governing body of volleyball to this day.

Volleyball Rules

Although it was designed to save players the effort of running too much, volleyball is still quite a physically demanding sport. Teams consist of six players (in beach volleyball, it's two) who try to keep the ball up in the air and bounce it off the ground on the opposition's side of the court. A net separates the two halves of the playing field, and it's untouchable -- running into the net or getting caught up in it when hitting the ball is considered foul play.

One of the most important rules to remember is the one stating that the ball can only be touched three times within a team before it gets hit across the net -- any more than that is foul play. This is usually broken up into three stages of play -- receiving the ball, setting up a player for a spike, and the spike itself. A spike is an act of slamming the ball across the net to make it difficult for the opponent to receive it and counter. The ball has to exchange hands after every hit, meaning that one player can't hit it twice in a row.

A volleyball match lasts until one of the teams wins three sets. A set in volleyball consists of 25 points. This means that the runtime of the game varies. It can either be a really brief, 3-0 win, but it can also turn out to be a nail-biter 2-2 draw with a final "tie-break" set, which is played until 15 points. It's also important to note that teams can't win a set by a difference of one point -- it has to be two or more. In the case of the scoreline being 25:24, the game continues until one of the squads achieves that difference.

The Bottom Line: Important Tournaments and Leagues

The most important tournament in volleyball is the Olympic Games. As opposed to other sports, such as football, for example, the association's tournament is much less important, although the FIVB's competitions are also renowned amongst volleyball fans. One of the most interesting ones to watch is the FIVB Volleyball Men's Nations League, which is an annual national teams' tournament, created in 2018 as an answer to the fans' demand for more national teams' matches.

The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships is the official tournament of beach volleyball. What's interesting about this competition is the fact that it is one of the very few double-gendered tournaments in the world, meaning that both men's and women's teams compete for the same trophy.

Finally, the FIVB also organizes the Men's World Championship, which is also extremely popular. The current champion is Poland, who won it for the second time in a row in 2018. Interestingly enough, the team that holds the most championships (six) hasn't competed in the tournament for more than thirty years because their country has been dissolved. It's the Soviet Union, and although the Russian Federation's team is a force to be reckoned with, they have not come close to the scale of their predecessor's successes.
