Lille vs Montpellier – Ligue 1 Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Match Day 33 encounter, with Lille taking on Montpellier on Friday the 16th of April, 2021, at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Just before the March international break, Lille lost 1-2 to Nimes(!) and were level on points with PSG at the top of the Ligue 1 table. Back then, it felt the momentum was on PSG’s side, as the reigning champions had finally “catch” Lille at the top and the first game after the break was exactly against them in Paris. Somehow, Lille beat PSG 0-1, regained their… solitude at the top of the table and last weekend did an awesome job in Metz as well (0-2), to protect their three-point lead over 2nd-placed PSG. Their current form reads; WWLLD. They are on 69 points from 32 matches, this is one of the six “finals” they have until the end of the season, that will determine if they will remain above PSG. Lille have 20W, 9D and 3L, having scored 53 goals and conceded 19. Three teams have scored more than them, but no team has done a better job than them defensively in Ligue 1 this season. Coach Christophe Galtier played a 4-4-2 formation against Metz last weekend. Yılmaz opened the scoring in the 60th minute (Metz had wasted a penalty in the first half) and Çelik secured all three points with his 89th-minute goal.

What a game that was… 1-0, 1-2, 2-2, 2-3, 3-3 deep into added time, this is how things went last weekend when Montpellier hosted Olympique Marseille. Mind you, Montpellier opened the scoring less than 60 seconds into the game, and OM were left with 10 men in the 62nd minute, two side-details that make that 3-3 even more… memorable. Montpellier’s current form reads; DWDWD. They are on 46 points from 32 matches, sitting 8th in the table, two points behind 7th-placed Rennes and three below 6th-placed Marseille. They have 12W, 10D and 10L, having scored 52 goals and conceded 53. That’s 105 goals in their 32 matches(!). Monaco’s games have had exactly the same number of goals. These two teams have been probably the… most fun to watch throughout the season, as a neutral. Coach Michel Der Zakarian played a 4-3-3 formation against OM last weekend. Delort scored Montpellier’s first goal, and Laborde the other two.

In the reverse fixture back in December, Lille won 2-3 as guests.

A 2-1 victory for the hosts is predicted at full-time.

Date: Friday, 16th of April, 2021.

Venue: Stade Pierre-Mauroy
