NRL ROUND 9

MANLY SEA EAGLES VS NZ WARRIORS

SUNDAY MAY 9, 2 PM, LOTTOLAND, MANLY

After kickstarting their season with a couple of wins in recent weeks, Manly now head home to Lottoland to host the Warriors who have been win/loss/win/loss all season long and looking for consistency.  Manly had a tough task last weekend, not only finding their way to Bathurst, but once they got there, taking on the white-hot Panthers, which ultimately was too tough for them, as Penrith won 28-16, leaving the Sea Eagles with a 3-5 record and on the cusp of the top 8.  The Warriors played at Gosford last weekend, their makeshift home-ground for the Covid-19 era, and defeated the Cowboys, but only just did enough, winning 24-20, and are 4-4, just inside the 8.  Sunday weather forecasts look ideal for rugby league in the north of Sydney, a great day out for the family and what should be a lovely environment, and a quality game.

Manly have been hit with a pair of injuries up front, as Taupau and Aloiai are both out, both of which could prove hard to replace, as they had been doing their go-forward jobs so well, nonetheless, Hasler has picked Keppie and Paseka to do the job.  That opens up a door for Olakau’atu to start in the 2nd row, in an otherwise similar squad to what went to Bathurst, with the possibility of either or both of Suli or Taufua returning if other needs arise.  Murdoch-Masila is a big out for the Warriors after suffering concussion last weekend, and is replaced by Katoa.  Exciting stars Wash and Berry are named again, while another young superstar in the making Harris-Tavita is closing in on his return, which will pose some interesting halves selection headaches for coach Brown.

It was just a month ago that these clubs met, and this fixture was the game that ignited some life into a previously horrible Manly season, as they won in golden-point thanks to a Cherry-Evans field goal, at Gosford.  Manly are now seen as fringe contenders for the title at $31 in the Grand Final winners market, while the Warriors are $51, but could easily make that number come down by stringing together some wins.  Manly are fancied to win this one by about 6 points, as they are $1.48 favourites, while the Warriors are $2.65, and if their pattern continues, will lose, after they beat the Cowboys last weekend.

PREDICTION:  Manly too good at home, win by 10.

BETTING TIP: $2.75 for Manly to win by 1-12 is the safest bet here.
