NEW ZEALAND WARRIORS VS MANLY SEA EAGLES

FRIDAY APRIL 9, 6 PM, CENTRAL COAST STADIUM, GOSFORD

Despite the tough news that they are not playing in Auckland until July, the Warriors will host Manly at their make-shift home venue of Gosford, and look to put a poor loss against the Chooks behind them.  Manly have had a terrible start to the 2021 campaign, complicated by countless injuries, as the 0-4 record, does not look like improving, after losing against Penrith last Thursday, without troubling the scorer.  The Warriors are 2-2, but will be keen to forget the efforts against the Roosters last weekend, and play the rugby league we know they are capable of after the first month of the season.  Warm but ideal conditions are forecast for the central coast venue, with temperatures in the early-mid 20s no wind and no rain about, giving players every opportunity to perform.

New Zealand have been hit by an injury bug too lately, with this weeks’ exclusions including Fonua-Blake and Bayley Sironen, while Bunty is also out suspended, for coach Browns’ 250th NRL game as coach.  Ah Mau and Harris are the props to start this game, while Murchie is starting in the back-row, and Evans, Ale and Curran comprise a fairly inexperienced bench, alongside Murdoch-Masila.  Manly too have plenty of ailments, as Boyle joins those sidelined with injury, giving Gosiewski a start in the back-row and Harper replaces Suli in the centres.  Sipley is named on the bench after making an appearance earlier in the year.

The Warriors enjoyed two wins in 2020 against Manly, despite having to play all their games in Australia, as they won 26-22 in the round 13 fixture and then 40-28 in a game just 7 weeks later in round 20.  In what was supposed to be a return to Auckland for the Warriors, this weekend, they will instead play at a venue they have enjoyed the past season plus, whereas Manly have not, they have conceded 40+ points in the past 2 games in Gosford. The Warriors are $1.42 favourites to take this game out, with just a -6.5-point handicap, suggesting bookmakers believe Manly are a shot at going to 1-4, at $2.90 to win.

PREDICTION: Warriors to bounce back to form, beating Manly by 10+.
