Lyon vs Monaco – Coupe de France Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Knockout quarterfinal, with Lyon taking on Monaco on Wednesday the 21st of April, 2021, at Groupama Stadium.

Lyon found things easy in their first two games in Coupe de France this season, they beat Ajaccio 5-1 and Sochaux 5-2, both at home, but the situation was very different in the round of 16, when they had to visit Red Star; Lyon were 0-2 up at halftime, but by the 74th minute Red Star had equalized(!). The game was decided on penalties, where Lyon did a better job. Their current form reads; WWWDL. They last played on Sunday, they beat Nantes 1-2 as guests in Ligue 1. The end of game week 33 found them sitting 4th in the table there, on 67 points, but leaders Lille are just three points above them, with PSG and Monaco in between them. This has turned out to be an absolutely magnificent season in Ligue 1 and especially the last few game weeks are expected to keep fans at the edge of their seat. Coach Rudi Garcia played a 4-2-3-1 formation against Nantes last weekend, with Slimani up front. Depay scored both goals for Lyon, in the 5th and the 37th minute (the latter from the penalty spot).

Just like Lyon, Monaco needed penalties to eliminate Metz in the round of 16, after a goalless draw at home. Before that, they had beaten Grenoble Foot 38 0-1 as guests and Nice 0-2, also as guests. Their current form reads; WWWWW. Mind you, one of these “Ws” is the win over Metz on penalties, not really a win in 90 minutes. They last played on Sunday, they beat Bordeaux 0-3 in Ligue 1. They sit 3rd in the table there, on 68 points, two behind leaders Lille, one below 2nd-placed PSG and one above 4th-placed Lyon. Coach Niko Kovac played a 4-2-3-1 formation against Bordeaux last weekend, with Ben Yedder up front. Volland was the one who opened the scoring in the 29th minute, Gelson Martins made it 0-2 just two minutes into the second half and substitute Jovetić added the cherry on top in the 90th minute.

Lyon and Monaco last met in October, the hosts triumphed 4-1 in a Ligue 1 match.

A 1-2 victory for Monaco is predicted at full-time.

Date: Wednesday, 21st of March, 2021.
