NRL ROUND 5

PARRAMATTA EELS VS ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS

SUNDAY APRIL 11, 6.15 PM, BANKWEST STADIUM, SYDNEY

The Sunday evening fixture, which is the last for the season, as we revert to two Sunday afternoon games for winter, is one of the games of the round, as the Dragons showed losing Hunt isn’t a killer blow to them, while Parramatta have started the season very well, after a first round first half scare against Brisbane.  Since that time, the likes of Gutherson, Mahoney and Nathan Brown have shown why they are superstars, and Parramatta are a top 4 contender in this season, a genuine premiership threat.  The Dragons are showing us that they too are a genuine contender at least for a top 8 berth, after winning against Newcastle, the Cowboys and Manly following their first-up loss against Cronulla.  Cool conditions but clear with a stiff breeze await these players in Sydney’s west, in front of what should be a large crowd at the pristine new Bankwest Stadium.

As Parramatta players take turns in giving coach Arthur reason to give them games off, Papali’i again switches from the starting back-row to the bench, due to the return of Matterson who has recovered from concussion.  They have further stocks returning in that ilk as Bryce Cartwright has forced his way onto the bench, to debut for Parramatta, meaning both Ray Stone and Hipgrave are overlooked for this game.  St George Illawarra have Jack Bird returning from his `1-game forced holiday when he was suspended, with Wiliame maintaining his place in the side on the bench, and Ford missing out on selection.

Merrin and Alvaro both play milestone games, and it is fitting in some ways that the latter play against Parramatta, where he played 89 of his 99 games to date, while Merrin is in his 150th back where it all started for him after 4 years away at Parramatta and then Leeds.  Parramatta will need to be wary if they want to repeat 2020’s successes and win their first 5 games of the season, as the Dragons too are out to repeat the result of 2020 when they won 14-12 in a memorable game in August, when Rawalawa was near his steamrolling best on the wing.  The Eels are $1.28 favourites for this game, with a handicap margin of 10.5 suggested in betting markets, while the Dragons are every chance of what would be a genuine upset, given their odds of $3.75.

PREDICITON: St George Illawarra to produce the goods and win by 6.

BETTING TIP: Dragons by 1-12 pays $5, that is very enticing.
