AUSTRALIAN SUPER RUGBY FINAL

QUEENSLAND REDS VS ACT BRUMBIES

SATURDAY MAY 8, 7.45 PM, SUNCORP STADIUM, BRISBANE

Just as it is across the ditch in Christchurch; in Brisbane it is Finals time also, as the mighty Queensland Reds prepare to pack Suncorp Stadium to the brim and take on the dominant team of the past the Brumbies, in a humdinger of a Final.  It was only a last ditch effort from the Force, to defeat the Reds by 3 points that meant Queensland have a blemish on their record for the season, albeit very good at 7-1.  The Brumbies too were fine, they have a 6-2 season, alive, after making it 7, by demolishing the Force 21-9 in the preliminary final, last weekend, and can now dream of winning back-to-back titles, as this Final is their title to defend.  A warm Saturday, will turn into a perfect evening for rugby, come game-time, as temperatures ease to around 19 degrees, in dry, clear weather, and the game takes place in front of a huge crowd, of near capacity, 50k.

Reds coach Brad Thorn, a legendary dual-international in his own right, had some answering to do, when naming James O’Connor as captain of the Reds for this final, instead of Wright who drops to the bench.  Smith assumes the lock position vacated by Wright, while Scott-Young switches to play flanker, while Flook gets a run at centre, due to the facial fracture that Paisami suffered, while Campbell returns following a hamstring issue.  The Brumbies had to fight hard against the Force, and ultimately it means, Slipper and Samu are out of this game, following a fierce forwards battle, they are replaced by Sio and Frost in the starting side, and Stowers and Lloyd on the bench.

It was a tense game last time these sides met at this venue, as the hometown Reds got the chocolates, winning by just 2, thanks to the boot of O’Connor as the Brumbies scored 3 tries to 2.  It was the same margin down in Canberra, earlier in the season, as the Reds won 40-38, but again the boot of O’Connor proved too good, despite the Brumbies scoring 5 tries to 4.  Hence, discipline will be a key training area for the Brumbies, as penalties have cost them so dearly in recent games.  The Reds are -4 in the handicap market, and $1.57 favourites to win this game, while the Brumbies are every chance at $2.50, to defend their title.

PREDICTION: Reds deserve the silverware, should win by a try or so.

BETTING TIP: $2.50 for the Reds to win by 1-12 is good value.
