AFL ROUND 8

RICHMOND TIGERS VS GEELONG CATS

FRIDAY MAY 7, 7.50 PM, MELBOURNE CRICKET GROUND

Round 8 of the AFL starts with an absolute blockbuster from the home of the sport, the MCG, as the Tigers, the defending premiers, take on the Cats, who they beat in the Grand Final last season.  Thus far, it has been a bit less than stellar from the Tigers, but they did record a fine win last Friday, defeating the Dogs, who were previously unbeaten and are now 4-3, 6th, following their win by 22 points.  Geelong too have had some wayward times already in 2021, but are also 4-3, after they lost against Sydney in a memorable nail-biter last Saturday evening by 2 points.  Ideal conditions await in Melbourne, as only a little cloud is predicted for Friday, without much wind and certainly no rain, meaning a big crowd should jam into the MCG, and watch a high quality game of AFL.

Richmond have been given the shot in the arm they need to fight on this stage, after their main man Dustin Martin was declared a starter for the game, following a pair of games off due to concussion.  The other regular returning from the casualty ward for the Tigers is Nick Vlaustin, who slots straight into his position a centre half back, they do have a negative though, as Cotchin is not named do to injury.  Grimes and Naish are the other outs for the Tigers, who will be keen to build on their 4-3 record, but the Cats will be equally eager, and have the identical record.  Rohan plays his 150th for the Cats, while Baker celebrates 50 for the Tigers and Short brings up his 100th.  Miers is ill and unable to fill his role for the Cats, and Clark as well as Narkle are not selected, which gives Simpson a game from the bench, and Higgins who will start across half forward.

In the historic Grand Final, at the Gabba, Richmond were far too strong for Geelong, as they ended up belting them by 31 points, securing their 3 title in recent seasons, while the earlier regular season game was similar, when the Tigers won by 27.  Richmond are still getting plenty of premiership winners market money, as they are $5, while the Cats have cooled recently, and are now $10, which is 5th in the market order.  Richmond are -7.5 in the margin handicap market and $1.62 favourites, while the Tigers are a touch longer at $2.30, meaning either team winning, would not surprise bookies.

PREDICTION: Richmond by 10-15.

BETTING TIP: $2.10 for the Tigers to continue their recent dominance over Geelong, suits me.
