NRL ROUND 5

SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS VS BRISBANE BRONCOS

THURSDAY APRIL 8, 7.50 PM, STADIUM AUSTRALIA, SYDNEY

An in-form South Sydney host the Broncos to start the 5th round on Thursday evening, as they look to continue a flawless run since the first half against the Storm on opening day.  Brisbane have shown troubling periods in most of their games to date, only putting a good performance together when they beat the Dogs in round 3, 24-0.  That is not to say that Bennett will be taking his former club lightly, Souths have areas to improve upon and their depth is starting to be tested in some positions.  At this stage, with some 20 weeks to go until the finals, Souths are 2nd favourite to win the title, behind Penrith at $4.75, while Brisbane are $151, with their odds just to make the top 8, sliding to $6.50.  Though some early Thursday storms are predicted in Sydney, by game-time the weather should be good, with temperatures around 20 and not much wind or rain likely.

Cody Walker, Souths general and playmaker is suspended this week, which gives Benji Marshall a start outside of Reynolds, but it cannot be overstated how big of a loss Walker is to this team.  Dean Hawkins, a local 22-year old from Randwick comes onto the bench to debut, effectively replacing Walker.  Jacob Host starts for Souths, as Koloamatangi was suspended also, and is another big out, as he has shown fine form in the early goings of 2021.  Brisbane too have a suspension to worry about, as Carrigan misses, but seem to have a good replacement in Pangai, after he was dropped to the bench to accommodate the return of Haas and Lodge last weekend.  Farnworth is out also for the Broncos due to shoulder soreness, which gives long-time fringe back, Richie Kennar a start, playing his 30th game in 7 seasons.

In what seems like an age ago, Brisbane did actually beat the Bunnies, on the weekend before lockdown, last year, round 2, 22-18, featuring a remarkable hattrick of tries for the now injured Staggs.  The 2nd game from 2020, much later in the season went the way of the Rabbitohs, as they won 28-10, with their genuine superstars performing, especially Latrell and Reynolds, while Gagai got 2 line breaks.  Souths are deserved clear short-priced favourites for this game at $1.06, with a huge 21.5-point line for margin betting markets, while Brisbane are no ones pick at $9.50.  Expect a large crowd in the biggest stadium in Sydney, despite the Broncos recent woes, in a game sure to have plenty of eye-opening plays.

PREDICTION: Brisbane cannot feature here, has to be Souths by about 20.

BETTING TIP:  Johnston will look to keep his name firmly in the representative selectors thoughts, by scoring, $3 for him to do so twice or more is plausible.
