UK CHALLENGE CUP QUARTER FINAL

ST HELENS SAINTS VS HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS

FRIDAY MAY 7, 8.15 PM, EMERALD HEADINGLEY STADIUM, LEEDS

The 2nd game of the quarter-finals double header on Friday, at Leeds, sees the high-flying Saints take on Huddersfield in what on paper looks to be a lopsided affair, as the Giants will need to excel for them to take the advance here.  St Helens had no favours in the round of 16, but defeated Leeds anyhow, 26-18, and are unbeaten all year, having won 5 straight to start the season, accounting for Leigh by 10 most recently.  Huddersfield are 1-4, but are coming off a win that surely boosted their confidence, when they got Leeds by a point at home, last week, they defeated Leigh by 18 to secure this opportunity.  Cold and breezy conditions should not complicate this game for the clubs as they are used to playing and excelling in this atmosphere, that is crying out for crowds, but impossible due to the Covid-19 pandemonium.

St Helens are only getting stronger, as players return to health, this week it is Morgan Knowles and Joel Thompson, though they have lost another pair of lesser known players, Wingfield and Bentley to injuries.  Huddersfield have just one change after their sole win of the season last week, they have dropped half Oliver Russell, so they can include Owen Trout in their squad.  St Helens will be eyeing off a return to prominence in the Cup winners’ list, as they have not won since 2008, whereas the Giants last success in this competition came way back in 1953.

If Huddersfield stand a chance of winning this game, they are going to have to defend better than usual, as the Saints are building their successes in 2021 on the back of elite defence, they have conceded just 34 points all year long, in the league.  St Helens beat Huddersfield recently in the Super League, 18-10, while it was much uglier for the Giants last year when the Saints won 54-6 in September.  St Helens are favourites to win this title, at $3.25, while the Giants are $17, in a muddled market, for this game, St Helens are $1.16 and -14.5 in the handicap market, with Huddersfield outsiders at $5.

PREDICTION: St Helens way too good, win by at least 13+.

BETTING TIP: Grace to score a pair of tries @$5 seems interesting.
